libraries
Because the average per capita income in India is among the lowest in the world, children’s toys and books are considered luxury items and libraries are virtually non-existent in schools for the underprivileged. Public libraries are also not readily accessible. The few books that are available at such schools are locked up for safekeeping, keeping them out of the hands of students. Even when they have fought to acquire the skills to read, many children do not have access to books to practice and enjoy these skills, which results in their attrition. This inhibits independent learning and the development of intellectual curiosity. We strive to counteract these conditions by creating a space where children can hone their English reading and writing skills.

Each Veda Library is established within an existing room in a school. Because the school community provides us with a room, we are able to create our libraries, which are child friendly learning environments, with speed and at a relatively low cost. Since 2011 Veda Libraries has impacted the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged children.
